Magmar Max Monday and this week in Pokémon GO (Aug 3-9)
August 9, 2026 · David · 8 min read
Dynamax Magmar debuts as a T3 Max Battle this week, plus Arctic Embers, Lake Trio raids, Mega Blaziken, Hatch Day babies, and where to spend particles.
This week in Pokémon GO is front-loaded with Dynamax Magmar on Max Monday, then Arctic Embers, Lake Trio raids, Mega Blaziken, Shadow Giratina, a Fire and Ice Hatch Day, and the usual discovery bonuses. If you only have a few hours free, Magmar particles, Wednesday raid changeover, and Saturday eggs are the parts that actually move the needle.

Max Monday: Dynamax Magmar (Aug 3)
![]()
Dynamax Magmar debuts in Max Battles. Window for denser Power Spot pressure is Monday, August 3, about 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local, with Magmar staying in the Max rotation through August 9. Community reporting puts the Max Monday hour peak at 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. local for in-person dens and discovery bonuses.
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cost | 400 Max Particles per battle |
| Tier | T3 (harder than Feebas-style T2s earlier in the month) |
| Hundo CP (Max catch band, community-checked) | 1367 |
| Shiny | In the pool; treat it as a long grind, not a guaranteed night |
In practice, T3 Magmar means your free particle bank does not last forever. Plan a short walk loop so you can top up particles between dens instead of sitting on one spot and running dry.
Is Magmortar worth the candy?
![]()
As a Fire Dynamax attacker, Magmortar sits in the top pack once you evolve it, but it is not the ceiling. The rough order people care about right now:
| Rank band | Fire Max option | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Dynamax Moltres, Gigantamax Cinderace / Charizard | Clear first choices if you already own them |
| Strong | Dynamax Magmortar | Attack stat only a hair above Dynamax Flareon; still a real budget path |
| Fine | Dynamax Flareon | Easier candy if you already farm Eevee |
If your Max box is thin on Fire, stock Magmar candy now. If you already have G-Max Cinderace or a built Moltres line, treat Magmar as a shiny and candy side quest, not a mandatory all-nighter.
Counters that actually tank
Fire dens punish pure glass. Water and Rock tanks that can also charge the Max meter are the play:
| Tank / attacker | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Omastar | Water/Rock. Rock Throw is strong but legacy; Water Gun charges the meter faster if you need phase pressure |
| Dynamax Suicune | Water tank option for the fire moves |
| Gigantamax Entei / Calyrex lines | Heavy Max phase damage when you are ready to push |
Bring one solid tank and one high-damage Max attacker. Solo glass with no tank will feel bad on T3s.
August Max Monday pattern (context)
Magmar fits a month of 400-particle dens:
| Date | Dynamax | Expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Aug 3 to 9 | Magmar | Debut. T3, 400 particles |
| Aug 10 to 16 | Beldum | Another 400-particle dens week (Metagross path) |
| Aug 17 to 23 | Magikarp | Tier still settling in community charts; plan candy either way |
| Aug 24 | Hitmontop | Optional / dex-leaning for most players |
| Aug 31 | Eevee | T2 class demand; Glaceon and friends later |
Do not empty your entire particle bank on Magmar if you also want Beldum and Eevee later.
This week at a glance (Aug 3 to 9)
| Day | What to show up for |
|---|---|
| Mon Aug 3 | Max Monday Magmar (all day dens, sharp peak 6 to 7 p.m.) |
| Tue onward | Arctic Embers (Summer Marathon): fire/ice wild, Snom shiny debut in eggs |
| Wed Aug 5 | 5-star Lake Trio + Mega Blaziken + Shadow Giratina (Altered) windows open |
| Thu | GBL: Ultra League + Weather Cup (Great League format) |
| Fri | Friendship Friday trade bonuses |
| Sat | Fire and Ice Hatch Day (Magby / Smoochum focus, 6 hours) |
| Sun | Scenic Sunday routes, incense, Mateo |
Arctic Embers (Summer Marathon)
Fire and ice themed wild spawns, event GO Pass style bonuses, and a shiny Snom debut locked to 5 km eggs.
![]()
| Piece | Detail |
|---|---|
| Snom | New shiny. 5 km eggs only during the event |
| Other 5 km eggs called out | Sneasel, both Darumaka forms, Sizzlipede |
| Shiny-boosted wild (even days pattern) | Ponyta and Snover on Aug 4, 6, 8, 10 |
| Shiny-boosted wild (odd days pattern) | Slugma and Vanillite on Aug 5, 7, 9, 10 |
| Pass-style bonuses | Tier 1 leans XP on spins; higher tiers cut hatch distance |
If you want Snom, incubators and 5 km eggs matter more than pure wild grinding.
Wednesday raid changeover (Aug 5)
Lake Trio (5-star)
![]()
| Region | Boss |
|---|---|
| Asia-Pacific | Uxie |
| Europe, Middle East, Africa, India | Mesprit |
| Americas and Greenland | Azelf |
These can also show in the wild in their home regions. Remote the ones you are missing while they sit in raids for the week. Psychic raid meta is not carrying the season, so this is mostly dex, shiny, and trade bait.
Mega Blaziken
![]()
Still one of the best Fire and Fighting megas you can power. Community rankings put it near the top of Fire by pure DPS. Energy toward mega level 3 is the real goal if Fire or Fighting candy is on your weekly plan.
Shadow Giratina (Altered)
![]()
Weekend-leaning shadow raid windows open in this stretch (through early September). Better as a Ghost attacker than a pure Dragon in raids. Ultra League is where high-rank shadows earn their keep. If you only raid, one strong Ghost investor is enough.
Thursday GBL
Ultra League is the main ladder format, with Weather Cup running in a Great League style cup. Fine week to burn sets if dust and stardust bonuses line up with your usual GBL habit.
Friendship Friday
Same kit you already know, still worth planning specials around:
| Bonus | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Higher lucky odds on random trades | Dump bulk fodder |
| Extra special trades (up to three total) | Legendaries / long-distance |
| Guaranteed XL candy on trades | Build tanks and GBL lines |
Fire and Ice Hatch Day (Saturday)
![]()
About six hours of hatch-focused play. Expect mostly 2 km eggs from stops, Magby and Smoochum in the spotlight, half hatch distance during the window, and a friendly shiny rate for hatch days (community figure people plan around is about 1 in 10). Eggs also sit on a 10/10/10 IV floor, so hundo odds are much better than wild.
| Hatch day math people use | Number |
|---|---|
| Shiny rate (hatch day class) | ~1/10 |
| IV floor | 10/10/10 |
| Rough hundo odds at that floor | 1 in 216 |
Larvesta can show as a rare 5 km bonus egg for some players. Half hatch distance does not stack with Arctic Embers pass hatch reductions, so pick the path that saves you more incubators.
Shundo babies are the real chase. If you only play one non-Max session this week, Hatch Day is it.
Scenic Sunday
Routes and incense get better spawn density, Mateo can show up more often while you walk routes (stack those 7 km gifts), and buddy interaction distance on routes is softer. Good cleanup day if you skipped Saturday eggs.
What to prioritize
- Magmar dens if you need Fire Max attackers or the shiny (budget particles for later Mondays)
- Hatch Day Magby / Smoochum for shiny and IV floor
- Snom 5 km eggs during Arctic Embers if the shiny debut matters to you
- Remote Lake Trio pieces you still lack
- Mega Blaziken energy if Fire/Fighting candy is thin
- Friendship Friday specials for legendaries and XL
Skip stacking endless Magmar if your particle bank is already spoken for by Beldum and Eevee later in August.
